Roasted Makhana (Airfried)

Jump to Recipe

Hello!! With Adyant starting Term 3 tomorrow, had to be prepared with a bunch of easy snack options. Mil & I like to keep it simple.. honestly, full credit to mil on this. She was always very practical about his brekkie option (till date multi grain kanji right from when he started having solid food back when he was 7 months old) even when I was curious about trying other options. She had the foresight that this would be a super easy option when he starts school and oh boy, that is just so true! Adya has a tall tumbler of kanji every morning and he’s off to school.. I have heard so many parents grumble about their kids either not wanting to have brekkie or running out of time in the morning to have something solid and have just a glass of milk before running out.. This one is peace of mind for us and saves a lotttt of time and energy in coming up with variety brekkie options :D.

Similarly, she was also pretty clear on the food options to school – we have like 6-8 set snacks that just keeps going round and round and same goes for lunch. These makhana/ fox nuts are something that we found and started using in the last 10 years! I love how it’s easy to prep this and how lovely it tastes. Thankfully, Adyant likes these and weekly once this goes in his snack box. My mil always uses a stove top roast method for this in a kadai/ pan. Off late, everything of mine goes into the Airfryer and this one too has met its fate with the airfryer in my house :). It’s even easier to make these in the airfryer since it takes even shorter time than on a stove top plus you don’t need to stand and roast :). and oh, it’s even more crispier in an Airfryer. So if you have kids or if you are looking for some healthy evening snack option, go for this one!

Recipe Notes
  1. We have an airfryer oven at home. If you use an airfryer, you’d probably need to airfry for a max of 2-3 mins.
  2. You can dabble on the seasoning as you wish. I made this for Adyant and not just him, but I also love this seasoning :). We always have dal powder handy since that’s Adyant’s idli podi. Ground roasted channa dal/ pottu kadalai tastes very different from besan. So please don’t even think of using besan for this.
  3. You can use just 1/2t red chilli powder (if spicy) or 1t red chilli powder (if not spicy) instead of the dal powder.
  4. If you are vegan, you could use vegan butter or regular vegetable oil or virgin coconut oil.
