No bake Bread pizza
PIZZAAAAAAAAAA??? Did anyone just say pizza (a huge eye roll)? Might sound a bit exaggerated but that’s exactly how my Adya reacts when he sees or hears pizza. Like seriously, what is up with kids & pizza? What’s that natural underlying factor that binds kids & pizzas. I so far know only 1 child who dislikes pizza (Weirdo Vedant :p :p) and I find that unbelievable. Anywho, I think I have mentioned Adya’s love for pizzas even when he was just 10 or 11 months old & barely had any teeth. He literally jumps with joy when he sees me making pizza & is so ready with a plate in his hand. Of course, the same rule applies for when we buy pizzas but that’s a very rare affair ever since Adya came into our life.
I was probably in grade 4 or 5 when we had our first ever pizza. I distinctly remember this incident – we had our regular paediatric check up done and there was a small bakery near that clinic. So me mom prak went to the bakery to eat something. My brother ordered a milk shake (safe fellow he) & I ordered a pizza (always a risk taker :D). This was the time when the pizza word was starting to buzz all around (think pizza hut & pizza corner set its shop in chennai around that time) & I just wanted to see what the fuzz was all about. The bakery guy gave a very soggy, a very soft & a heavily ketchup loaded pizza. I like any form of bread (body doesn’t like it is a different topic altogether :)) & I was able to consume it quite comfortably. My brother & my mother hated it & the 2 of them decided that there would no more be a P I Z A in our english:). Things have come so far along from then that not only do Prak & I enjoy pizzas, both our kids enjoy pizzas too :D. Prak – life always has different plans for us :D.
Anyways, one thing about home made pizzas is that, it most certainly needs a bit of planning. This is even if you make a no yeast instant base and that’s exactly where this bread pizza comes handy. When I have kids over at home whom I know like pizza, I offer to make them this bread pizza if the whole meet up is unplanned & it’s such a hit. It’s also a hit amongst adults. So much so, that my mother in law has asked me to make it once for her so she can savour this and eat. What I love most about this recipe is that you can do this without any need for oven and the whole literally takes less than 5 mins to put together and tastes definitely like heaven.
- 1 slice white/ brown bread
- 1 tsp pasta/ pizza sauce
- 1/2 cube processed cheese
- a few basil leaves
- 1/4 tsp ghee/ butter
-
Spread ghee/ butter on both sides of the bread.
-
Heat a flat tawa/ pan on low flame & toast one side of the bread.
-
Meanwhile, grate the cheese cube so that you have grated cheese.
-
Flip the bread & spread the pasta/ pizza sauce on the toasted side of the bread.
-
Sprinkle the cheese & tear the basil leaves roughly with hand & sprinkle that on top as well.
-
Cover with a lid (with depth such that the bread doesn't stick to the lid) & let it cook in low flame for 1 or 2 mins (or till the cheese melts).
-
Take it off heat. If you want it to look authentic, cut it into small discs using a cookie cutter or the lid of any stainless round box.
-
Serve warm. Adya has the centre nice round bread pizza while I derive total pleasure digging into the crumbs :).
- If you want to use any veggies, I would recommend you saute them on the tawa/ pan lightly before topping it on the bread.
- If you don't have fresh basil on hand, sprinkle 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of dry oregano or any italian seasoning of choice.
- You can even spread any pesto of choice instead of the regular pasta/ pizza sauce.
- If you want to cut down on the ghee or you are lazy, you can toast the bread in a toaster & then finish the reminder of the process on a stove top or microwave.
